I did my first floating therapy session in a sensory deprivation tank over the weekend, and it was life-changing. Here’s my review of it, with the small cheeky video montage I put together.
—
1-hour floating inside a sensory deprivation tank. I’ve been meant to do this for ages, and kept on postponing it. If meditation is Pikachu, floating is Raichu.
The music starts. You get undressed, get inside the tank and close the door. Game over.
It’s not just 1-hour floating. It’s 1-hour alone with your mind. It’s funny how you can be so comfortable in silence, yet the moment you close the door, you are no longer aware of your defences. Fear kicks in. The intellectual brain takes over, and until you let go of worries and concerns, 15 minutes have elapsed. You surrender, and accept whatever comes next. You lose the concept of time, and 30 more minutes go by in a blink. You turn the light on, off, you put salt in your eyes, and you start pushing yourself from one side of the tank to the other because you have nothing else to distract yourself with. You realise it’s a brain strategy to avoid thoughts, and go back to trance mode. You have no idea how much time has passed by until the 1-hour mark music starts.
There’s an evolution from Raichu. Its name was Gorochu. It had fangs and horns and looked like a god of thunder. That’s pretty much the after effect. A constant state of bliss where suddenly everything is wonder.
You go home, have the half-eaten burrito you forgot in your bag, followed by a Nutella cookie. Nothing can disturb you. Would we do this again? I feel like I need more than 1-hour to allow evolution to take place. But we would do this again. We might even make a video about it. That’s how much we recommend it.

I have been meaning to try a sensory deprivation tank since I've seen them in the TV series Fringe (well over a decade ago) but never got around to. Do you recommend the place you went? What should I take into consideration?
