Everlasting Devotion
There are moments when everything makes sense. Glimpses of hope and simplicity that can make you not want to unravel the meaning of life. As for the meaning of life is a moment. That moment.
Were you to remove all the barriers of time and distance, new opportunities would unfold. I wonder if that will be a reality in a nearby future. I wonder if Ishiguro has already written about it through the lenses of the Sun. I wonder if that’s something future societies will be laughing at and Gen-Z from 2523 will take for granted.
If that was the case, would love and relationships be simplified? On one hand, having free access to anyone at anytime would eliminate the necessity of community building in a new place. If I could have lunch with my best friend in Bali every day, I probably would. Would prices be normalized then? Regions more homogeneous?
As for love, options would be limitless. I could choose to go on a date in Sydney on Monday. In San Francisco on Tuesday. Timing and chemistry being the boosts of a relationship, you’d only really need chemistry. I wonder what that would be like.
I also see how that could make people feel more lonely. Social butterflies would prosper, people pleasers would struggle and the whole matrix of 150 relationships would cram.
